Highly Suspect's past two records have been phenomenal testimonies to this new generation of rock music, but this new record has been completely disappointing. For starters, some of the songs on this record get too personal and are kinda cringy and uncomfortable to listen too, such as "fly" and "16". The instrumentals are boring, needless and don't transition well into the other songs. The "rap" songs are mediocre, annoying and don't feel creative. The "rock songs", such as "snow white" and "@tddybear" are just cringy and cheesy and sound lazily written. MCID does have a few good songs, but they aren't strong enough to support the rest of this lazily written, chore of a record. Overall, MCID is a huge let down to fans, and is nothing unique to new listeners. This record will surely be forgotten.
This only gets 1 star because it won’t let me give it zero. The lyrics on this album are some of the worst I’ve heard on any album in a long time. It’s like an angst ridden 13 year old wrote most of this album. These Days is legit one of the worst songs I’ve willingly listened to ever. This was one of my favorite bands when they came out and I get that they wanted to go in a new direction but they failed miserably at it. I’m not sure that they will get my money when a new album comes out
They are incredibly talented and driving with the emergency brake on. They sound like a knock off band inspired by themselves, Royal blood, and an awful rap group. It’s still better than 99% of pop, but won’t appeal to their fan base. To be more positive, this album is a more tolerable maroon 5
I can’t think of another rock band that had as much potential as Highly Suspect when Mister Asylum released. Sadly with the last two releases, it seems they have seriously killed their own momentum. The boy who died wolf had some good ideas but was obviously very rushed and the lyrics were terrible compared to Mister Asylum and their self titled independent release. And with MCID, different does not mean good, and this album is very disappointing considering how long it took to make. And for a sound that is drastically different, the songs are surprisingly forgettable. I doubt their next album will be better as this feels more like Johnny Stevens (feat. Highly Suspect) and its looking like it’s going to stay that way. We became fans of a rock band. You have the freedom to make whatever music you want as it is your music first, but your fans are not obligated to stick around if you change.
I felt I had to post my review because I have a hard time understanding why everyone dislikes this album so much. I held off purchasing this record for almost 2 months after it was released because of all the negative reviews, but then I got the trial of apple music and gave the album a try. I was really surprised at how good it is. It is very different than the first 2, which everyone has noted, but IMO that's what they needed. I don't want them becoming AC/DC and playing the same song on 20 different records. I heard all types of influences from Weezer-ish power cords to Depeche Mode inspired electronic rock, and for good measure there are a few hard rocking songs that could have been pulled off Mister Asylum. I will say not all of it is amazing, the interludes were not for me, but this album is much more melodic and easier to listen to than The Boy Who Died Wolf. The song writing also took a step forward with more introspection and honesty than I had expected. Overall, it's a wonderful listen and had they released the record under another band name, my bet is it would have been well received by the same people who kick it. One other thing to clear up, I saw comments in a few reviews about the "rapping" of which there is very little of. On the couple of songs that it does pop up in, it's entertaining, not distracting or overwhelming. Give the guys a break and let them spread their wings. They're peacocks, you gotta let them fly! - Det. Terry Hoitz
All the other negative reviews are spot on. I won’t bother repeating what they’ve already said. That said, this album changed my life in one way. I will never pre-purchase an album by a band I love again. This isn’t a “new direction”, it’s something else entirely that betrays everything they wrote previously.
Great album, I’ll agree with most people that it is different than the other 2, But. Just like the other 2 you can hit play on song 1 and let it play! I love when that happens and not many bands can do it! They have done it 3 times now. Another good one this year is I prevail - Trauma.
if you listen to the instruments and not the lyrics it sounds decent. In previous albums I was critical of the fact that it felt like he would write the lyrics and then come back and haphazardly drop profanity into the song without it really making much sense or bettering the song, but these songs make me cringe from start to finish. Im a huge fan of gojira and am now actually disapointed in them. How did that happen? The majority of these songs are terrible exept for upperdrugs. Drug abuse really speaks to me. thanks for not messing that one up.
All fans of Highly Suspect obviously love rock. So the fact they wanted to move so far from it stung a bit, but I like many genres and appreciate their skill and artistry in past music of theirs, but this album was just a hot mess. There didn’t seem to be any flow to the album it was just all over the place, the lyrics had very little depth, and the overall sound was unimpressive. There were a few moments where I heard classic HS (16 and Arizona) but neither of them surpassed their best previous work. It seems to be the product of a conflated ego, existing in an echo chamber, and being determined to be “different” while also pandering to the modern pop/hip-hop scene.
I wanted to wait a couple weeks before giving a review on this album. When I first listened to this album, I hated it. The first half of the album was not Highly Suspect. After listening a couple times, I realize that this album isn’t not as bad as I originally thought. Arizona, Canals, Upperdrugs, Snow White, and @tddybear are the best songs and are what Highly Suspect is known for, emotion/deep lyrics. 16, These Days, Tokyo Ghoul, Fly, Freakstreet, Silk Road, are okay, not the best but they’re still good. Juzo, Tetsuo’s bike , Nairobi, Taking off and SOS are lacking something. The songs that are great are worth the listen. I’d skip on the electronic songs
This bands first two albums made me believe rock was alive. They are two of my favorite of all time. Simply amazing and great live. This new one.........if I had a physical copy of it, I’d use it to start a fire and hope no one ever heard it again.
I’ve loved you guys since the beginning. I, and many others, feel that there is not a modern rock band that encompasses rock like you guys did. I, and many others feel that you should stick to your roots. I get it, you’re surrounded by hip hop artists in your record company.... but that doesn’t mean you should hop on that band wagon. We have enough hop hop artists out there. Keep pumping out the stuff your fans loved.... the alt rock we heard from your previous albums. We can still hear essences of your previous albums in this album, but not enough... not nearly enough. I mean this with the greatest respect. I hope you guys read this.
DROP SOME X TURN LIGHT"S DOWN LOW WAIT 20 MINUTES NOT TO SAY YOU NEED ANY DRUG'S TOO LIKE TO ALBUM ALSO GET YOUR GIRLFRIEND IN HER BIRTHDAY SUIT THAT'S JUST THE WAY I LIKE THING'SAS OZZY WOULD SAY FLYING HIGH AGAIN IF THE NEXT COUPLE SUCKI WILL AGREE WITH YOU BUT EVERY ALBUM CANNOT BE LIKE THE LIKE YHE LAST COUPLE JUDGETHEM AFTER TWO MORE ALBUM'S IF THE NEXT 2 SOUND LIKE GARBAGE THEN I WILL AGREE WITH YOU UNTIL THEN SHUT YOUR F-ING MOUTH!!!!!!!
My feelings really see-saw when a band does this. This album is much different than their earlier releases. I've read that they wanted to move in some new directions. I get that. But I've ran into this before. An example would be Blue October. Their first several albums were a fury of emotion. Now they're different and they don't play their original songs at all. Can you imagine being a band that has songs that rip your heart out night after night when you sing them? And then doing that for decades? But can you also imagine being a fan for 20+ years and not hearing their top hits when you see them in concert? Check setlist.fm and see how many times HS has played Little One lately? They didn't play it when I went a few weeks ago. Still a good show, but ouch. That said, IMO Arizona is the best song on this album and it was phenomenal live. They need to release Round and Round too.
First heard Mister Asylum and was immediately sucked in. They had the perfect amount of blues, grunge, and alternative sound that the rock genre needs more of. Boy Who Died Wolf was a slight departure from Mister Asylum, exploring more of the pop/hip hop side of the band’s writing style, but still a very solid and enjoyable album. MCID, however, is just not good a good album. There’s an obvious identity crisis going on with their writing style. I understand that artists evolve, but this does not feel or sound like that. There are a couple of good songs on MCID that are very palatable, like Upperdrugs, Snow White, and the fantastic (and possibly the best song on the album) Arizona. The rest of the album seems like a rock artist’s poor attempt to break the barriers of genre. MCID’s lyrics seem much more shallow and immature like you would expect from a Top 40 pop star, not from Grammy nominated songwriters that penned great songs like Lydia and Serotonia. I appreciate their desire to explore the depths of their creativity. But, in the end, I hope Highly Suspect returns one day to the sound that got me and a multitude of others hooked.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever been more disappointed. The first two albums are borderline masterpieces and they were easily one of my favorite younger bands. I’m not sure what the hell this is.
This album is amazing! It’s a different sound on some of the tracks than what we are used to from these guys, but give it a few listens. Artists need to evolve otherwise they grow stale. I love it, the album mixes hard rock and hip hop through out.
I preordered the album after previewing the lead singles 16 and Upperdrugs. I’m not a huge fan of Highly Suspect, but I bought Mister Asylum and thoroughly enjoyed it. 16 and Upperdrugs sounded similar enough to Mister Asylum that I figured the rest of the album would be the same. I have concluded I was mistaken and am not fully happy with my purchase. I appreciate when bands experiment with their sound and try to grow, but unfortunately I am less enthused about the band’s new sound than I initially was upon down loading MCID. I wish the band success as it continues to grow and evolve, but ultimately I wish I could get my money back.
This doesn’t feel like Highly Suspect at all. The first two albums were absolutely amazing. This, however, is a huge flop. Upperdrugs is fairly solid and 16 is okay. Other than that, who said this record was a good idea to release... they should be fired.
It takes guts for a successful band like Highly Suspect to venture into new musician territory. As a fan, I truly appreciate the courage and commitment to the art. Also, when the album is viewed from within the context of newly created art itself, it proves to be an exceptional listening experience. Thank you for taking the risk with this new album.
Highly Suspect: MCID Total length: 58min 19sec Rating: 3/10 First off I want you to know that I took the time to listen to every song in this album without skipping a track at all. This is an honest review and was trying to be as biased as possible. I also don’t really leave reviews but was asked to listen to this and wanted to share. Don’t waste your time or money on the album, most of which is horrible and cringy. All they sing about is drug use, how they hate themselves and want to die, and pointless profanity which doesn’t make them look cool. Shocked these guys are signed. It doesn’t seem like they have an identity at all. Almost sounds like they scrap together a bunch of random songs, only marketed the decent ones and tricked people into purchasing the pre-orders. They won’t keep fans for too long when they trick the fans. I’m truly shocked and glad I didn’t pay for this. I did get a copy and wow, it’s pretty awful. I’m giving this album a 3/10 rating. **************************** How I scored it: There are 16 tracks on this album and I gave each track a ‘.625’ point value. After listening to the whole album I found only 3 decent songs and 4 that had potential but eventually messed it up. I gave each one that had potential a quarter value from the ‘.625’ which was ‘0.15625’. With the 3 decent ones and the 4 potential ones the score came out to ‘3.125’. So I scored it 3/10 **************************** Only get the following songs they were good, especially the song “16”: Track 02: 16 Track 05: Upperdrugs Track 10: Arizona **************************** The following songs were extremely pointless instrumentals: Track 06: Tetsuo's Bike Track 11: Juzo Track 16: Nairobi (Outro) **************************** The rest of this album was pretty cringy and lyrics sound like they were wrote by an immature child: (Example: “ ...I need to bust a nut ... wish that I was playing with your butt.” Track 14) Seriously so childish. Track 01: Fly Track 03: Freakstreet Track 04: Calnals Track 07: Tokyo Ghoul" (featuring Young Thug) Track 08: SOS" (featuring Gojira) Track 09: @tddybear" (featuring Conor Mason of Nothing but Thieves) Track 12: The Silk Road" (featuring Tee Grizzley) Track 13: Taking Off Track 14: These Days Track 15: Snow White ****************************
Yes I love hip-hop and rap. I like pop and synth music. I love rock. I’M NOT OPPOSED TO DIFFERENT GENERES. This album fails on every front with the exceptions of a few songs like upperdrugs, Arizona, and Snow White and maybe tee grizzleys part. Terrible writing/cringey lyrics, subpar production, and SUPER generic music. It pains me to say this because I love this band and their first 3 albums. “Experimenting” and doing something “different” than your previous work doesn’t automatically mean good. There’s a reason Johnny's rap career never took off. Show this to any rap fans and they’ll laugh at it. Show this to any pop and synth fans and they’ll be uninterested. What a disappointment.
Someone on here warned us this album was going to be drastically different from their prior albums and they were right. This album is all over the place. Sounds like a Terrible Johnny side project. They’re trying to appeal to everyone, but instead appealing to no one as this sounds like a compilation of different artists. In the end, Highly Suspect are alienating their loyal fans with this biggest disappointment of the year. From the bizarre shout outs at the end of the first track, unnecessary heavy metal intro to “SOS” to the immature lyrics on a few songs only a teenager would like. “Upper drugs” is fantastic, “16” is a good mellow track, “Canals” is good, “These Days” would’ve been better had they eliminated the immature lyrics around the 2nd half of the song, “Snow White” is good as well. Don’t be surprised when this album bombs and they are forced back in the studio and we’ll get another album within a year.
Is this even the same band??? I’m so disappointed because I loved the first 2 albums. I’ll admit, I didn’t listen to the newest album much before purchasing tickets for a concert in feb 2020. Now I’m wondering if it’s even going to be a good show....canals and 16 are ok I guess....but the rest.....ugh
There are some good songs but it just seems like there’s something missing these guys have so much potential and this album was just ok, but the previous two were really good, this albums lyrics are just kinda meh there isn’t a lot of meaning
I pretty much agree with most of the negative reviews of this album. Creatively, artists can do whatever they want. That is their right. However, as a consumer most of the music on this album does not resonate with me the way the last two albums have. I agree this sounds more like a solo project than an actual band playing real instruments ( like the last two albums). I thought I would be buying a modern rock album when buying a Highly Suspect album. Instead is very electronic and featuirng other artists like a pop /rap album. What happened to the other two guys? They don't even sound like they are even playing their instruments on many of these songs. What happnened to the guitar too? There are a few good tracks, but nothting on the level of the last two albums by far. It is always disappointing when bands do this as a fan. Once again, call this album something else. Not a Highly Suspect album. Let's face it. In this day, every artist and performer is a brand too.Brands have customers. Why would you want to alienate your fans/customers? Go explore your art under a different name next time and build a different fan/customer base. If there is another Highly Supsect album ever again, then please consider your audience next time.
You wouldn’t believe that this is the band that wrote Serotonia, My Name is Human, and Wolf. I understand going a different direction or experimenting... but the lyrics and delivery on this album are really bad.
If you don’t think it’s rock, you obviously haven’t listened to the track Canals, Snow White, These Days, etc. Arizona is a beautifully written song. Grow a pair and evolve like the band. It’s the best songwriting so far. You do you Johnny.
